Food and Beverage Data Project

This data project includes trends in Austin, Texas.

Austin was the fastest-growing major metropolitian area in the country from 2010 to 2018. Along with this rapid growth come more high-rises, restaurants and bars each and every way you look. Sites such as Eater Austin and Culturemap are a good source for you to try and keep up, but that can be timely and tedious.

Choose a Zipcode to explore some of the food establishments in your area.

Restaurants by Zipcode

Restaurants are a place where you go to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and maybe even have a first date. We are socialized to know the rules that come with visiting a restaurant, however, sometimes we fail to notice what is happening behind the scenes.

According to an article in the Austin Statesman, statistics show that "no city in Texas spends more per capita for drinks than Austin". (Dinges, 2018) As you can tell by the chart below the 78701 zipcode has the highest sales in wine, beer and liquor. What is commonly known as "Dirty 6th" along with most of the popular downtown area is included in this zip code; this zip code is also home to the majority of people in the service industry.

There is no doubt that there is a correlation between alcohol abuse and the service industry. Stress, proximity, and the access to alcohol are just some of the things to consider.

Alcohol sold by Zipcode

This chart gives you an idea of the consumption of liquor, wine and beer according to your zipcode.

In the state of Texas, service workers usually get paid $2.13 an hour. This is not a resonable amount to cover cost of living, so workers rely heavily on tips. However, that's not the only thing that workers rely on after a long shift.

The service industry is a high-stress and fast paced environment when you are trying to provide the best service for your guests. Just as some people meditate to deal with stress, other people decide to deal with the stress and anxiety a different way. A liquid way.

Alcohol consumption is something that's associated with a a job in the service industry, an extracurricular activity if you will. It is integrated in the culture and sometimes incouraged in order to create a relationship with guests or a guests' way of saying thank you.

Restaurants such as Comedor are incorporating and encouranging a healthy way to work in the service industry without needing to reach out for a drink. Ben's friends is a support group for people in the food and beverage industry that are struggling with abuse and addiction. It is important to know that these resources are available and that there will always be a support group for when things get tricky.
